Conference on “Social Life during the Anti-Japanese War” Held in Shanghai

"2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. In order to push forward the study of the Anti-Japanese War history, the conference on “Social Life during the Anti-Japanese war,” jointly held by History Department of Shanghai University and the editorial office of Modern Chinese History Studies was held in Shanghai from January 9 to 11, 2015. The conference was attended by over 60 scholars from Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Shanxi, Jilin and Hubei. The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Liu Changlin from History Department of Shanghai University. Professor Xin Pin from History Department of Shanghai University and Professor Xu Xiuli, Editor-in-Chief of the Modern Chinese History Studies gave a welcome speech and an opening speech respectively.
     The conference was divided into two parts: keynote speeches and discussions. During the first part of the conference, Professor Rong Weimu, former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Studies of China’s Resistance War against Japan gave a speech entitled “Introduction to Scholarship of Anti-Japanese War.” Professor Su Zhiliang, Dean of Humanities and Communications College, Shanghai Normal University, introduced Chinese people’s immigration and survival during the period of Anti-Japanese War. Professor Xin Ping gave a presentation entitled “Compensation from Japan for Foreign Nationals in Shanghai after the January 28 Incident.” Professor Tao Feiya from the History Department of Shanghai University introduced the Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal (Jiaowu zazhi) published during the Anti-Japanese War. 
    During the second part of the conference, participants carried out heated discussion on such issues as social mobilization and lives of people from low social classes, relocation of schools and school education, party building and the integration of social forces, charities and social assistance, immigration, media and culture during the period of the Anti-Japanese War. The discussions were respectively chaired by Professor Wang Chaoguang, Deputy Director of the Institute of Modern History, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Professor Weng Youwei, Associate Editor of the Journal of Historical Science, Professor Wang Qian’gan from the Anhui Academy of Social Sciences, Professor He Xiaoming from Hubei University and Professor Xu Youwei from Shanghai University.
