The History of the 1948 Shamian Incident in Guangzhou: A Study Based on the T.V.Soong Papers

Author:   Zhang Junyi    Update Time:2015年06月02日

The incident in which the British Hong Kong government forcibly demolished residents’ dwellings in Kowloon in early 1948 triggered a new round of negotiation between China and Briain on the issue of the sovereignty of Kowloon and a wave of protest by mainlanders against the British Hong Kong administration. People from all walks of life in Guangzhou set up the Guangzhou Diplomacy Support Association and organized high-profile parades and demonstrations. Faced with indignant protestors, the CC Clique headed by Gao Xin, the chief of the Nationalist office in Guangzhou, made a great show of organizing and leading the Guangzhou protests in order to gain political capital and forestall any action by the underground CPC in response to the opportunity. However, due to the lack of coordination of the numerous local cliques in Guangdong, the demonstration got out of control, and led to the Shamian Incident in which the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou was set on fire. This landed the Nationalist government in an awkward diplomatic situation.
