Liu Danian

Liu Danian was born in the family of a small landlord in Huarong County, Hunan in August 1915. He went to school at six. He studied in the traditional private school in most time. He graduated from Hunan Traditional Chiness Classics School in Changsha in 1936. In 1938 he went to the Agency of the Eighth Route Army, where he was given directions by Xu Teli and Wang Lingbo. And he arrived at North Shaanxi in August and studied in North Shaanxi Anti-Japanese Military and Political University. He joined in CCP in the same year. Next year he graduated as the students of the fifth stage in North Shaanxi Anti-Japanese Military and Political University. After graduation he was assigned to work in the West Hebei and South Hebei Anti-Japanese Bases. Later he lived and fought in the Hebei Plain and Taihang Mountain for a long time. From 1939, he had been the dean of Administration Cadre School for West Hebei Prefecture, teacher of South Hebei Anti-Japanese Academy, associate dean of engineering college, North University, and the associate dean of History Department, North University and Northern China University. In May 1950 the Institute of Modern History, Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded, and he became the reseach fellow of the Institue, and at the same time he also was the associate managing director of the Editing and Translating Bureau, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After 1954 he became the associate president of the Institute of Modern History and the member of Research Institute of Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. At that time, Fan Wenlan, who was the president of the Institute of Modern History, had been old, so Liu Danian was in charge of the business of the Institute. Liu Danian was criticized as a capitalist-roader wrongly and went to labour in the Great Culture Movement. In 1978 Liu Danian recovered his job and became the president of the Institute of Modern History, the professor and doctoral supervisor of the Graduate School, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In 1982 he left the leading position of the Institute of Modern History. In 1964 he had been selected as the representative of the third to seventh sessions of National People’s Congress, and the standing committee member of the fourth to seventh sessions of National People’s Congress. In 1980 the Chinese History Society was refounded,and he was selected as the member of the presidium and the managing chairman of the second and third sessions of the Society. Liu Danian died of illness in 1999.
